Etching #2: Aquatint & Sugarlift

Discover the possibilities and subtleties of etching using tonal imagery. Create rich blacks and delicate greys using aquatint. Explore how to paint directly onto the copper plate to develop painterly marks and use acid like watercolour - perfect for artists who enjoy the freedom of using a brush.

During the course you will develop the skills to use aquatint, sugar-lift, spit-bite and open-bite techniques. In the process of creating an original print, you will experiment with ways of drawing and printing the plates to produce rich, tonal images.

This course is a great way to build on upon existing intaglio skills (or those acquired in our Etching #1 class) – and will cover plate preparation, mark making with sugarlift and the application of aquatint, along with paper preparation, registration techniques and the correct use of an etching press to print an original fine art print.

The fee for this two-day class includes materials. Participants will be working on a 12cm x 18cm copper plate and we recommend bringing along image ideas, sketches, drawings, photos, etc that are relevant to the graphic nature of the medium.
