APW in Venice
|
 |
In a highly ambitious program, Australian Print Workshop set up workshop in Venice for 3 weeks (June 2007).
Following in the footsteps of the many great artists who have visited and have made prints about this iconic city over the centuries, APW travelled to Venice with four leading Melbourne artists, Rick Amor, Jon Cattapan, Jan Senbergs and Louise Weaver. The artists were invited to produce a suite of prints inspired by and about 'the city of lagoons' - its culture, history, monuments, art and unique environment.
This wonderful 'artist-in-residency' project took place at the Venice Printmaking Studio, coinciding with the world-famous Venice Biennale. APW had exclusive use of the Studio and Artist Residential Complex, in a landmark venture where APW 'exported' its services to work with Australian artists overseas.
The Venice project resulted from APW Director, Anne Virgo's recent overseas study scholarship awarded by The Collie Print Trust. Visiting a number of print workshops and other institutions in the USA, UK and Europe, one of the Director's aims was to further strengthen APW's existing international networks and to establish new relationships with like-minded organisations and to identify opportunities for future collaboration. APW has now forged a new relationship with a non-profit print workshop in Venice, Italy and was offered a unique opportunity to undertake a project in collaboration with the Venice Printmaking Studio.
The Venice Printmaking Studio Centre is a non-profit organization, sponsored by the City Council of Venice. The Studio, in a renovated warehouse, is at the water's edge on the main island of Venice, with views of the lagoon from the studio windows.
A limited number of the works resulting from this unique project are available for purchase from APW and through the Print Store.
The suite of prints produced by the artists was exhibited at APW Gallery from November 2007 to February 2008.
APW gratefully acknowledges the generous and ongoing support of The Collie Print Trust and ANZ Trustees & the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria - Department of Premier and Cabinet which have provided assistance for this project.
